WHAT IS THE PELVIC FLOOR?

The pelvic floor is a bowel shaped group of muscles that sits within your pelvis. It is involved in almost everything we do, including: bowel, bladder, sexual function, respiration, lymphatic drainage, holding up your organs, and the gait cycle (walking). There can be dysfunction in these muscles or in the tissue that surrounds and interacts with these muscles (fascia, nerves, etc). Tightness, weakness, and/or poor coordination in these muscles can lead to the symptoms listed above, and can be treated through pelvic health physical therapy.

HAVE YOU TRIED PELVIC HEALTH PHYSICAL THERAPY AND ARE WONDERING HOW WE’RE DIFFERENT?

At Catalyst, we strive to make sure your body is working as a whole. Because your pelvic floor is involved in every aspect of your life, we want to ensure we’re assessing your pelvic floor throughout your daily activities. Working directly with your pelvic floor is a great addition to any treatment session, but we also want to ensure we load the pelvic floor and retrain how it moves when you’re up and moving in your daily life. At the initial evaluation, we perform a functional assessment of how you move in all 3 different planes of motion. We may also assess your core control and how you’re squatting, jumping, and balancing. An internal assessment may be performed on the first day if there’s enough time, and only with your consent.

Why patients choose Catalyst for pelvic health

Pelvic floor physical therapy requires a clinician you trust, in a setting that is private, with the time to actually do the work. Every Catalyst pelvic health appointment runs physical-therapist supervised with a certified pelvic health physical therapist — in a private treatment room. We treat postpartum recovery and diastasis recti, urinary incontinence in all its forms, pelvic organ prolapse, painful intercourse, pelvic pain, and pre/post-operative pelvic surgical cases. We coordinate closely with referring midwives, OB/GYNs, and urogynecologists across San Diego. Care is delivered in bite-sized progressions you can sustain at home, with reassessments every few visits to make sure the plan is working. The clinical team includes multiple certified pelvic health specialists, so you have continuity of care even if your schedule changes.

What to expect at Catalyst

Your first visit

We start with a thorough conversation about your history, goals, and the issue that brought you in — then run hands-on assessments: range of motion, strength, joint mobility, and movement-pattern testing relevant to your condition. You leave with a working diagnosis, a plan of care, and the first round of bite-sized exercise prescription.

Every follow-up visit

Each visit puts you with a physical therapist for hands-on bodywork, skilled therapy to correct faulty biomechanics, exercise progressions, and reassessments — so each session builds on the last. We update your home program with bite-sized changes, not a flood of new exercises.

How long will care take?

Most acute conditions resolve in 6–12 visits over 4–8 weeks. Chronic conditions and post-surgical rehabilitation typically require 16–24 visits over 8–12 weeks. We’ll give you a personalized estimate after the initial evaluation, and we’ll tell you honestly when discharge is appropriate.

What to bring

Photo ID and insurance card · any imaging or surgical reports related to your condition (MRI, X-ray, op notes) · comfortable clothing you can move in · a list of your current medications. Plan to arrive 10 minutes early to complete intake paperwork, or

No referral required. California is a direct-access state — you can begin physical therapy at Catalyst without a physician referral for up to 45 days or 12 visits, whichever comes first. See our insurance page for coverage details.
