With more than 1 out of every 4 Californians receiving a cancer diagnosis in their lifetime it’s important to clear up some misconceptions about massage therapy and cancer.
Back in the day, it was thought that massage could actually spread cancer by increasing circulation and was therefore contraindicated.
How sad! The truth of the matter is that cancer is caused by a DNA error in cellular code that controls cell growth.
Currently, Doctors routinely advise their patients to keep active, continue walking, running, going to the gym etc. A massage increases circulation, but not even to the extent of vacuuming the house. So of course massage can’t spread cancer!
But, what can massage do for our oncology clients?
According to studies of massage for cancer patients, massage can decrease stress, anxiety, depression, pain, and fatigue.
Decrease pain, anxiety and depression… what other cancer treatments can boast those fabulous effects?
What a wonderful gift to give our clients.
It is true that there are areas of concern for clients with cancer when it comes to receiving massage. There are often myriad concerns pertaining to bodywork and the cancer patient. Positioning restrictions, medical devices and implants, risk of lymphedema, bone metastases, low blood cell counts, risk of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), medication side effects, etc are all important considerations with working with this population. It is critically important that the therapist working on a cancer patient or survivor is knowledgeable and trained in oncology massage. Oncology massage is an individualized, gentle and nurturing integrated therapy that can be used to manage cancer treatment related side effects and to improve quality of life during treatment and recovery.
At Catalyst Physical Therapy and Wellness, our massage therapist, Amy, is thoroughly trained and volunteers weekly with oncology clients.
